Wall-mounting your TV – A guide to choosing the right wall mount
Updated 2 April 2026
To mount your TV on the wall, you first need to find the right wall mount. With so many options available, this guide aims to simplify your choice. With help from an expert at Verkkokauppa.com’s Helsinki store, we answer common questions: How do you know if a TV and mount are compatible? Should you choose a fixed, swivel, or tilting mount? And why pay more for a mount when cheaper options exist?
If that sounds like a lot, take the easy route – order your TV with wall installation and pick up the mount we recommend for that specific model. Read more in our TV wall mount installation guide.
Ensure your TV and wall mount are compatible
TV and wall mount compatibility depends on the TV's weight, size, and VESA standard. Wall mount product details clearly state the supported screen sizes and weight limits. If you're buying a mount along with a new TV, comparing the specifications is straightforward.

If you're buying a mount for a TV you already own, finding the necessary specs might take a bit more effort depending on its age. Information for newer models is easily found online, but for older TVs, you may need to measure the screen size and VESA pattern and weigh the TV yourself. Screen size is measured diagonally from corner to corner, excluding the bezels, and is expressed in inches.
What is a VESA mount?
TVs are attached to wall mounts using the mounting holes on the back of the device. The VESA standard defines the distance between these four mounting holes in millimeters. For example, a wall mount with a VESA of 300 x 200 has a hole spacing of 300 x 200 mm. There are several VESA standards, so ensure your TV and wall mount are compatible. If you can't find the specs online, you can measure the distance between the holes yourself.
Note: Some TV ports, like HDMI or USB, are located directly on the back panel. When choosing a wall mount, ensure it leaves enough space for these connections. You can easily check the port locations from the product images when buying a new TV.

Wall mount adjustability – fixed or swivel?
When buying a wall mount, consider whether you want the TV to remain in a fixed position or if you need to adjust the viewing angle, tilt, or even height. Almost all the wall mounts we sell offer at least a tilt function, though some fully fixed models are available. It's also helpful to decide the mounting height beforehand, as this determines the required adjustability. While eye level is generally recommended, the ideal height depends on your viewing distance, angle, and seating position—or simply what looks best aesthetically.
Fixed wall mounts – tilting or fully fixed
Fixed wall mounts can be divided into three categories based on the gap between the TV and the wall. A standard fixed mount usually tilts, leaving some space for adjustment. 'Slim fit' models offer a smaller gap with less adjustability. 'No gap' mounts, as the name suggests, sit as flush as possible to the wall, making the TV look like a framed picture. Note that 'no gap' mounts are usually only compatible with specific TV models.
The closer the TV is to the wall and the less it moves, the safer it is for installations on surfaces like drywall, as the center of gravity remains close to the wall. A fixed mount is an excellent choice if you always watch from the same spot and the viewing angle doesn't need to change. A tilting mount is a great option for spaces like bedrooms where the TV might be mounted above eye level.
