The best lens ever
Arvosana 5/5I used primes, but this lens has substitued my all 1.8 and f2 primes(35,50,85) and also get 28 mm. Its wort the money. If i compare tha value of 28-70 vs rf 24-70, the 28-70 should be more expensive:).
One lens strategy is real
Arvosana 5/5Have sold my lens collection and bought the RF F2 in February. So instead of carrying body and 24-105 + 35 1.8 + 85 1.8, I carry exactly one lens and I am happier.
I live in Northern Europe, low light is an issue even during most daylight hours, let alone indoors. 2.8 takes in half the light wide open, and desirable bokeh is harder to get, I also find the RF F2 bokeh much preferable to the RF35 1.8 (which I kept for size and macro).
I take photos of people, sometimes kids in available light - F2.8 1/8 second with 4 stop IS (once it comes out) is not fit for purpose, F2 1/16th with 1 stop IS due to the weight at wide angles is fine and often enough it comes down to this for non moving people.
Compared to the RF50 both lenses are approaching equal at 2.8 and above. With this lens I take most of my shots around 50mm but the flexibility to go 50% wider and 50% closer without sacrificing bokeh and IQ is fantastic.
For me it cured GAS and gear envy, because I know I have the best and I have one lens instead of 3.
The learning curve is steep and long - I’m still not done, I’ve been shooting for years with 35mm as my main lens and getting the right distance and angling is difficult, this lens is not the same as a 24-105, it’s not just to get the shot done - it is choosing the best lens for the shot for 90% of the scenarios (10% Tele and wider) from the range of this lens. 50mm is easy to learn, but 28 and 70mm is very different and the in between is unique to this lens.
It is of course a big and heavy lens, your family will get used to it and will be happy that you’re not changing lenses, almost ever.
If you’re sightseeing, no one cares how it looks. If you’re scared of the neighbourhood, leave it in your PeakDesign 5L bag (which only fits 24-105 and 35mm btw.).
Carrying the weight on your hand as opposed to your shoulder is different - more workout as opposed to back-pain inducing to carry 3 lenses in the bag.
Sure more range would be nice, sure IS would be nice (IBIS will hopefully come soon) but you got to stop somewhere, I’m not holding out for Sony/Nikon to give me the same + more range .. it will be like the EF 50 1.0 autofocus of 1987, Nikon and Sony will not be able to get where this lens is today. I cherish mine.
