Dream come true
This lens is honestly just unbelievable. The weight is incredible. Every time I pick it up I know throw it into the ceiling because I forget how light it is. It's only 100g more than my 24-70 2.8. The autofocus is incredible quick and it is very sharp, even with the 1.4x TC on it. Bokeh is lovely for the aperture. I've seen no chromatic aberration in any of the images I've so far taken. The stabilisation is very capable and a real help at such a long focal length. A lens like this has been my dream for years and it has met every expectation. I'm honestly blown away by it
A stunning lens - Incredibly good all round.
I pre-ordered this lens and it arrived early...
Ive used it as a 400mm and with the 1.4 Sony Teleconverter (560mm) and 2.0 Sony Teleconverter (800mm).
In all cases the lens behaved perfectly.
I own and use extensively the 200-600mm and 400-800mm G Zoom lenses that I find excellent. I sold my 300mm f2.8 as I rarely shoot at 300mm and nearly always used a TC on the lens.
The new 400mm f4.5 GM at 400mm offers more contrast (on a par with the 300mm f2.8 GM) and is at least as sharp as the two zooms at the same focal length.
The new 400mm f4.5 GM with 1.4TC 560mm F6.3 offers more contrast and is as sharp as both zooms at the same focal length and is comparable with the 300mm F2.8 GM with 2.0TC.
The new 400mm f4.5 GM with 2.0TC 800mm f9.0 offers slightly more contrast and is as sharp as the 400-800mm zoom at 800mm.
The autofocus is fast and sure in all cases.
Stabilisation is at least as good as the zooms - good enough to hand hold at 800mm.
Bokeh is more pleasing than the zooms at the same focal length - true GM look.
I didnt find chromatic aberration noticeable in any situation I used the new lens.
This performance from a lens as light as the 400mm f4.5 GM with and without TCs and as affordable is incredible.
