Verkkokauppa.com’s new warehouse automation system is the largest investment in the company’s history.

Press release, June 3, 2022

Verkkokauppa.com has launched its largest investment to date with the completion of a new automated warehouse system in Jätkäsaari, Helsinki. The world-class AutoStore system has a maximum capacity of 25,000 product titles and can pick and deliver up to 1,000 items per hour. With this major investment, Verkkokauppa.com is preparing for the growth and evolution of Finnish e-commerce by offering even faster delivery times, as well as new ordering services and delivery methods.

The new automated warehouse system is integrated into the Verkkokauppa.com Jätkäsaari store. This gives the company an exceptionally large local automated warehouse, which is rare in the Finnish market.

“In e-commerce, the competition is now centered on delivery speed and reliability—how quickly the product reaches the consumer, whether they choose store pickup or home delivery. Thanks to this investment, the Jätkäsaari store's product selection will grow by as much as 30 percent, while significantly speeding up deliveries,” says Panu Porkka, CEO of Verkkokauppa.com.

According to Porkka, the new AutoStore system is designed to be scalable, with capacity growing alongside the online store. This increased capacity allows Verkkokauppa.com to better meet seasonal demands, such as for trending products that see sudden spikes in popularity.

Finnish consumers' expectations for e-commerce services are rising

In the new Jätkäsaari automated warehouse, 36 AutoStore robots handle product movement. The investment also drives Verkkokauppa.com toward more sustainable operations, as the company switches to using 100% recycled cardboard boxes in its automated packaging system.

According to Porkka, this major investment in automation is part of Verkkokauppa.com's commitment to improving the delivery experience, as Finnish consumers' expectations for e-commerce services continue to grow.

“In a highly competitive market, success comes from investing in the delivery experience—from order tracking to the delivery method, time, and location. The 'last mile' delivery model will also evolve in Finland in the near future. At the same time, more Finnish consumers will demand value-added services, such as having a new appliance installed and ready for use while the old one is hauled away.”
