The peak season for grills and bicycles typically begins in mid-March. In Northern Finland, the season follows just a couple of weeks behind the south, though this year’s mild late winter sparked interest as early as late February. The e-bike trend shows no signs of slowing down, while traditional gas grills remain the top choice for most homes this year.
Verkkokauppa.com, Finland's most popular webstore, analyzed bicycle sales and search data from the past winter. From November to March, children's bikes, city bikes, and hybrid e-bikes were the top sellers by volume, with hybrid e-bikes also leading in total sales value.
Search data shows that customers primarily visited Verkkokauppa.com’s cycling category looking for increasingly popular e-bikes. Other top search terms included electric fatbikes, indoor trainers, and bike trailers for transporting children.
“Versatile trailers allow the whole family to join in on bike trips, runs, or leisurely walks. When paired with an e-bike, they make commuting to daycare or the grocery store easy, even in varying weather conditions,” says Miikka Pelli, Category Manager at Verkkokauppa.com.Miikka Pelli.
Looking specifically at e-bike sales, hybrid and city models were more popular during the winter than electric mountain bikes or fatbikes, suggesting that winter cycling is largely concentrated in urban areas.
Regional differences persist between Southern and Northern Finland: between 2023 and 2025, nearly a third of bikes sold in Helsinki were city bikes, compared to just 16% in Oulu.
“In Oulu, known as the capital of winter cycling, more bicycles were purchased per capita than anywhere else in Finland. A significantly higher proportion of bikes bought in Oulu were fatbikes and electric fatbikes, which are well-suited for winter and off-road conditions,” Pelli explains.
Gas grills for Oulu, electric for Helsinki – grill sales follow last year's trends
According to Verkkokauppa.com search data, traditional gas grills were the top interest for Finns planning a purchase early this year. Regional preferences were also evident: while Oulu residents favored gas grills, those in Helsinki were more likely to choose electric or charcoal models.
“Many consider the charcoal grill to be the only authentic choice, though it requires more time and effort. A modern gas grill starts at the push of a button and is ready in as little as five minutes. As a faster and easier alternative, it’s perfect for everyday use and beginners,” says Sourcing Manager Petri Kavenius.
Top brands early this year included Weber, the American company that introduced the first kettle grill in 1952, and Verkkokauppa.com’s own brand Ströme, which launched several new products for the season.
While overall grill demand remained moderate during the winter, the mild spring boosted electric grill sales. Between January 1 and March 19, 2025, electric grill sales volume increased by 40% compared to 2024.
