Verkkokauppa.com updates its sustainability program: focusing on sustainable consumption and ambitious climate goals

Press release, 30 January 2025

Verkkokauppa.com’s updated sustainability program focuses on sustainable consumption through a circular economy and science-based climate targets, involving both suppliers and partners.

In recent years, Verkkokauppa.com has taken significant steps to promote the circular economy. The company has introduced used electronics to its selection and launched a Trade-in service, allowing customers to sell back functional used devices for credit. Driven by growing customer interest, Verkkokauppa.com has placed the circular economy at the heart of its sustainability efforts. The company aims for double-digit annual growth in the sales of circular economy products, services, and solutions. This strategic shift enables the sale and buy-back of used products across all relevant categories.

Verkkokauppa.com is also taking a major step in its climate action by committing to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to reduce indirect greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement's 1.5-degree goal. For years, the company has systematically reduced emissions from its own operations. This new commitment focuses on reducing indirect emissions within the value chain by engaging suppliers and partners in climate action.

"Committing to science-based climate targets is a major step in our climate work, as it means we are striving to influence emissions from the manufacturing of the products we sell. Emissions from our own operations are already near zero. Additionally, we have long promoted sustainable consumption by selling high-quality products that meet real needs," says Suvituuli Tuukkanen, Director of Marketing, Communications, and Sustainability at Verkkokauppa.com.

Verkkokauppa.com's sustainability program consists of four priority themes, with goals and objectives illustrated in the image below:

  • Passionately on the customer's side, building a circular economy
  • Ensuring the sustainability of operations and supply chains
  • Promoting employee well-being and growth
  • Maintaining exemplary business practices

The sustainability program was developed considering several perspectives, including the company's strategy and vision to create a new normal for buying and owning, a double materiality analysis, and stakeholder expectations monitored through surveys. According to a 2024 survey* by Verkkokauppa.com on electronics, e-commerce, and sustainability, more than half of Finns feel that the sustainability of electronics is important to them. There is high interest in purchasing used electronics, as well as in product repairability and repair services.

*Verkkokauppa.com surveyed Finns' thoughts on sustainable electronics purchasing and consumption. The survey was conducted by Kantar in May 2024, with 1,044 respondents aged 18–79.
