Verkkokauppa.com takes the circular economy online – 2/3 of trade-ins are now done online

Press release May 13, 2024

Verkkokauppa.com’s Vaihtokauppa service, which promotes the circular economy, is celebrating its first anniversary. Vaihtokauppa has quickly become an established part of the company’s service offering. The long-term goal is to expand circular economy services to cover almost the entire Verkkokauppa.com product range.

A sustainability survey conducted by Verkkokauppa.com two years ago revealed that half of Finns had sold or passed on used electronics in the past year. To meet this demand, Verkkokauppa.com launched Vaihtokauppa, allowing customers to sell back functional used electronics for a credit on their Tili. The service aims to make it easier to recycle functional electronics and extend the lifespan of devices.

The circular economy is also moving online

“We see a growing demand for circular economy services. We developed a customer-centric solution that makes it easy for customers to sell their functional used devices. We don’t want devices sitting in drawers until they lose all value and end up as electronic waste,” says Verkkokauppa.com’s Director of Services,Jussi Eskelinen, explaining the service.

Verkkokauppa.com’s Vaihtokauppa is the first and only fully online trade-in service for selling functional used electronics. An online-based service was the natural starting point for a company whose strategy centers on moving retail online. One year after its launch, Vaihtokauppa is an established part of the service portfolio, with usage growing by double digits every month.

Average credit: 133 euros

Data collected over the past year shows that mobile phones are the most popular trade-in category, followed by laptops, tablets, and smartwatches. Customers have received an average credit of over 133 euros for their devices, with the highest single credit reaching 892 euros. 66% of all Vaihtokauppa transactions were completed online, with devices sent free of charge via Posti using a return package delivered to the customer’s home.

Customer data shows that the typical customer uses the trade-in service when purchasing a replacement product. Through the service, Verkkokauppa.com has gained valuable insights into brand loyalty; in addition to Apple, OnePlus owners are among the most loyal. Vaihtokauppa is particularly useful when upgrading a phone, as the credit is added to the customer’s Tili once the trade-in is initiated, and the old device only needs to be handed over after the new one has arrived.

“Our long-term goal is to be able to buy back all the products we sell, and then resell them after they have been inspected and refurbished,” Jussi Eskelinen envisions.

About the Vaihtokauppa service

Vaihtokauppa covers functional smartphones, computers, smartwatches, and tablets, giving them a second life with a new owner. If a device is not fit for resale, it is recycled through an authorized partner.

The credit amount is based on the device’s current market value and condition. The final credit is confirmed once the device has been inspected.

Vaihtokauppa is one of Verkkokauppa.com’s services supporting the circular economy. The service extends the lifespan of electronics and promotes sustainable consumption.
