Finns are seeking easy and affordable cooling solutions, reveals sales data from Verkkokauppa.com, one of Finland's largest cooling equipment retailers. Increasing attention is also being paid to indoor air quality. While portable air conditioners have become early summer favorites, customer survey results show that the air source heat pump is the absolute favorite among Finns.
Rising temperatures and heatwaves have driven Finns to shop for cooling devices once again. Sales began to climb in early May and are expected to remain high throughout the summer. Verkkokauppa.com predicts a busy season, particularly for portable air conditioners.
“Currently, air conditioners account for nearly half of all cooling equipment sales, but fans are not far behind. The trend shows that people are looking for easy and flexible cooling solutions. More attention is also being paid to price, which is reflected in the popularity of affordable options,” says Verkkokauppa.com’s Selection Director Tatu Kaleva.
People have also become more aware of the health effects of indoor air quality. Stale air can cause breathing difficulties and headaches, among other issues. Proper ventilation removes odors, dust, and bacteria, making the home more comfortable.
During summer, it is especially important to keep the bedroom cool, as lower temperatures improve sleep quality. Cooling devices can maintain an optimal sleeping temperature of 15–19 degrees even during heatwaves, but it is important to choose the right device carefully.
“When planning bedroom cooling, you should pay particular attention to the noise level so that the device can be kept on at night if necessary. When purchasing, always check the decibel rating, as there can be significant variation between different models,” suggests Verkkokauppa.com’s Product Manager Tuomas Maung.
Air source heat pumps are the favorite, but fans are the most common in homes
According to a survey* conducted by Verkkokauppa.com, the air source heat pump is the clear favorite, with over half of the respondents naming it as their top choice. The device is particularly praised for its efficiency and versatility.
“Air source heat pumps are especially useful during summer heatwaves because they also remove excess humidity. These are larger household investments and are naturally planned more carefully. The first sales peak coincides with the first heatwaves of summer, and demand continues as long as the warm weather lasts,” Kaleva explains.
According to the survey, the most common cooling device in Finnish homes is the fan, which appeals to consumers primarily due to its low price. Kaleva notes that portable solutions like fans and air conditioners are especially popular when installing an air source heat pump isn't possible—for example, in rental properties. These options also serve as temporary solutions when long-term cooling isn't required.
“In the fan and air conditioner categories, we've seen a sales increase particularly in higher-quality and more advanced models. In the long run, however, the popularity of air source heat pumps is expected to continue growing, as they are the most efficient and economical way to cool a home,” Kaleva predicts.
*Verkkokauppa.com conducted a survey among its customers regarding the best cooling solutions. The survey was carried out between June 8 and 11, 2023, and received 220 responses.
