5 tips for DIY spring bike maintenance
When taking your bike out for the first time after winter, there are a few things you should check to ensure everything is ready for your first spring ride. Regular maintenance helps your bike retain its value, keeps parts in good condition longer, and saves you money. You can save even more by handling basic maintenance yourself instead of taking it to a shop every time. Use these tips to perform your own spring maintenance and get ready for the new season!

1. Check your brakes
Check your brakes before every ride, especially before longer trips. If the bike stops quickly and effectively without squeaking or other noises, your brakes are in good condition and don't need immediate maintenance. Note that if the bike has been unused for a long time, such as over winter, the brakes might feel sluggish at first but will improve with use. Take a few test rides before heading out on a longer journey.
By law, every bicycle must have functioning brakes. Riding with faulty brakes is not only dangerous but also illegal, and can result in a 40-euro traffic fine.
If you notice a significant drop in braking power or hear unusual noises, it's time to replace the brake pads and check the condition of the brake rotors. Rotors can be cleaned or replaced if necessary. Never use greasy detergents or cleaning agents on brakes, and ensure no chain oil gets on them.
