A lot of features that don't work well
Arvosana 2/5

Previously I had a simple Dreame D9 model. This one has a lot of additional features: camera with recognition, movable brush and mop, retractable legs. Yes, they improve cleaning, but at the same time each of them complicates it. The cleaning is slower and not as streamlined as my old cleaner. D9 just moved in predictable pattern without any problems. Here are the issues with the new one:

  • It uses retractable legs in unexpected places (like at <5mm bumps) and from time to time doesn't use them where it should, failing to go to the hall. It can unnecessary use them to pass over places where it could just simply go around.
  • Pet recognition allows dog to block cleaning. While old one just moved forward and dog could go away, this one thinks that the path is blocked and this can lead to a fail cleaning a room or a hall. There is an option to revisit blocked areas, but I couldn't see any difference after enabling it.
  • Map drifts. Very annoying bug, it is not fixed since D9. After a couple of months of work, the walls start to drift and disappear from the map, so that it is impossible to clean a particular room or re-partition the map (only closed areas are allowed to be marked, but since walls "move" software thinks they are not permanent and removes them from the map, making it impossible to mark a room because it doesn't have walls anymore).
  • In general it makes a lot (and I mean A LOT) of unnecessary moves and actions. It can deploy and retract mop or brash in the same place, it can stop, rotate in different directions, stop, hang for seconds. The old much cheaper model just cleaned everything pretty fast, while this one takes more time even though it can move with faster speed! But it wastes a lot of time on thinking and doing crazy things.
  • Somehow water in the clean container starts to smell badly. I don't understand how this happens. I left water in an ordinary bucket for months, and it never started to smell, but here it starts to smell after a week. So I increased cleaning and drying of the mop to maximum, this helped, but it is just a workaround.
  • Robot loses charge very fast even without doing anything. If return to the base station is blocked (for example by dog), it stops and waits for a human to bring it, but it continues to deplete charge very fast, like in a couple of hours the battery will be empty. The old model could stay without the base for a day, then shutdown and still have a lot of charge.
  • I think it damaged itself while using the legs, because I can now hear the plastic moving inside when I rotate the robot around and small pieces of plastic fell off from the inside. But I couldn't find the exact place where they broke off.

For a model that without sale costs €1300 this is unacceptable. I thought that a lot of sensors (structured infrared light, camera with light, lidar, bumper, optical sensors at sides and at the bottom) should make cleaning more robust and streamlined than the old one (that had only lidar and bumper), but it is quite the opposite!

The only good thing is that there is less chance the robot can stuck in a room full of mess (but it still could stuck two times with objects stuck in the brush, so object avoidance is not 100% effective). But it is not something me personally need often.
