Came with ample ink, but Brother initially blocked using it until I joined the online ink program. Sent me more ink, and was then usable. But kept saying I needed to pay more. Was not happy with this, but was able to cancel the ink program easily. Very pleased with the printer, not so with the ink situation but not sure if the original inks will work. Time will tell. 😀

I bought this about 6 months ago, and as a private tutor, I do print quite a lot of resources. However, I still have nearly ½ a tank of black ink, and over ⅔ tanks of each of the colours. Not cheap to buy, but has proven economical and reliable to run, unlike my previous Canon Pixma printer. Best decision I've made in recent years regarding printing solutions.

I purchased this printer combo after my HP one died, prior to that one, I always used BROTHER! So, it was back to what I know, and guess what it's even better! Paper TRAYS, not just 1, I'm very absent minded and think printer is broken, but just run out of paper!

The execellent Control Center 4 has disappeared and has been replaced by the inferior Print and Scan, which will not scan a document for emailing to Thunderbird. Wll not buy another Brother until this issue is rectified

i have had this printer for about 1 year the scanner stopped working now i am unable to realign my printer so what ever i print the lines are all over the place. Due to error message saying scanner not working it takes about 20 times of asking it to print something for the machine to actually print the sheet i want

There are some nice features as standard.

You can scan directly to many cloud based destinations - such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Sharepoint,, one drive, as well as to email, one-note. It also allows scanning to FTP/SFTP/Network/PC folder and of course a local USB drive.

The USB/Network connection is weird in that it is under the Scanning area, but does work. There is a Unique admin Password which is used to change some settings and also I believe for remote email printing. You can email a document to a brother.com email address which then prints it to the printer. I haven't tried this yet.

The printer allows you to set up multiple one-touch commands, such as Scan a Document, output as PDF and store on Google Drive. This is achieved through small wizards. They also provide a web interface to help with certain things, although not this functionality. There is a separate application which handles the print and scan features speifically - but the features on this a limited somewhat and could be improved very much

OCR Scanning worked quite well in my test - it took about 10 seconds to generate the text file directly to my PC for one A4 printed document

Photo Scanner is OK. Not great for photographs, but good for documents and written text.

Scanning at max resolution takes around 30 seconds, but is no better than lower resolution - if anything its worse.

The Printer is very fast - much more than my old Canon. It literally shoots out printed pages (they actually have a page stopper to stop the pages flying out to the ground) The colours are good, but i would say slightly muted. I used the same paper as my old Canon.

Fax has 99 shortcuts but i havent used this at all so cannot comment

It doesnt like Glossy premium paper. The photographs come out with far too much red. On normal paper it seems to be a bit better. Text on glossy paper is very bad.

There is no way to use the rear tray via the software settings. if paper is in the rear tray - it may or may not use it. It does not print to a 6x4 inch paper, even though the rear tray

By far the worse aspect is the printer driver software. You cannot print booklets, nor passport photos - there is no way of controlling anything like that. its Very poor software

After having this for a few months, I noticed that the printer goes through a clean cycle (using valuable ink) even if you havent used it. It does it anyway. Recently I upgraded the firmware, and found out that it now does this even when the printer is OFF, but has an electricity feed! If i print 1 page or no pages for a month, it does this anyway. Needless to say my printer ink is depleting faster with these self-cleaning cycles than i am actually using. I walked away from Epson due to their ink-subscription, and now Brother are using dirty tactics as well.

I've been using my new printer only couple of weeks but I have to say that I am so impressed by how great this printer works . People say that it is like retro style but I see it as a modern printer with all needed accessories and features helpful for even small business . I've got it for home use . First of all the printer itself is great . The Quality of printing is amazing and I was so impressed by printing a double sided document as more quick as I expected and after scanning my documents from the printer directly into my mobile phone my great feelings about choosing of buying of right printer just doubled . Overall the printer has a good medium size , good features like double sided printing and too many options for scanning , for an example : to iCloud , email address ,usb drive and more . The price is a reasonable for that printer as the look and quality overall amazing .

Bought two weeks ago as a replacement; delighted with ease of set-up, general quality of product and print. Very happy with purchase.

I have had the printer for about a fortnight. It was easy to set up. It reacts very quickly when I require a print and doesn’t need to keep cleaning itself as my previous Canon did. The trays are easy to use as is the screen.

This is one of the best printer i ever had,very good functions and speed of printing, I recommend it to everyone.

Cannot say enough how pleased I am with this purchase - this printer does EVERYTHING you need for the office - plus it is a decent size too. So impressed and blimey - relieved as well. Hadn't considered a Brother machine before now but so glad I chose it.

The printing speed was quick and smooth and quality of print is sharp, the operational noise was no more than other printers.

The screen could have been a bit larger but was useable.

Two months ago after having done a lot of research I bought this Brother printer. It is so fast! There are so many utilities that I have yet to explore them all and I can hardly wait to start.

I found it a bit tricky to install the software but managed at the end.

As I work from home I need a printer that is reliable and with good print quality, so far this ticks those boxes.

Installing the print cartridges is so easy and the set up is straight forward using the mobile app. Print speed is really good, so far it seems very economical on ink too. Having two paper trays is a useful feature too. Scanning and copying are good too, these can be controlled by the app or on the printer's touch screen. There are nice little touches such as the fold out paper catchers, for the scanner and printer functions, which if you are using them tuck neatly away.

Overall I'm really happy with this printer.

Quite and print speed is fast. I would really recommend it. I have now used it for over 2 weeks now and it is very much exceed my expectations. The touch screen is easy to use and the inkjet is durable as i have printed out a few hundred pages now but the colors are still crisp. Defintely good value for money. I also like it as it is very quite and I keep it under the stairs so not taking up desk space.

First impressions are really good, printer is wireless and it was easy and fast to set it up.

Printer has two paper trays for 400 pages, it has high ink capacity, touchscreen interface and it is 4 in 1 printer so you can print, copy, scan and fax in one place.

Printing quality is great, it is really fast when you print bigger amount of papers and double sided printing is real paper and money saver.

Scanning is easy as well I did not have any issues with it.

It is also easy to connect to the WiFi and your phone so that you can print wirelessly from anywhere, even out of the house. I have used the printer for general household printing, children’s homework and also for work documents. The printing is extremely fast and of a high quality. The printer also looks stylish and is a great addition to our house. I’m impressed by the speed and ease of all printing. The Brother app is also very easy to use and edit before printing.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The first thing you notice about this printer is it's quite heavy and cumbersome, which is not a bad thing because it means it well built and quite sturdy, ideal for business use. The wifi was a bit fiddly to set up, it wouldn't recognise my network so had to do it manually which was no hassle for me, but might be for some. The NFC function worked a lot better allowing me to print via my Huawei android mobile via the app.

The ink tanks were very easy to install, shake a couple of times, open the flap on the front and slot them in on and they were surprisingly large too. It then takes about five minutes to get the ink ready after that you are good to go.

The printing is quite sharp as you'd expect from a modern printer and quite quick without making a lot of noise. I have been using this printer for a couple of weeks now and it hasn't let me down and the ink seems to be lasting quite well. I have printed out a couple of pictures but these are not as sharp as documents, but I didn't really expect too much anyway. This printer comes with two trays for paper which is a good idea, no filling up the paper trays all the time.

Scanning is quite easy like on other printers and takes just as long, but the quality is really good, the only problem could be if you have big fingers or clumsy it might be difficult to operate the little led screen.

Overall this printer is good for what it's intended to do and feels sturdy enough that it will last a long time. The big ink cartridges are a plus, seeing other printers are using tanks and seem to last a long time. It's quiet enough and I had no problems with any paper jams or two sheets coming through at once. If you are looking for a printer for your home office or small business this will do the job for you.

The MFC-J4540DW is the printer that I have received to test. I have to say that this printer is super stylish. It's the perfect size for a home office. I also noticed that the paper capacity is large and it will not need to be replaced often. I also love that you can see ink levels on your LCD display which will be great as I start to use it more.

The printer prints really fast and the quality is amazing. I found it easy to set up though wireless was a little tricky. Overall, this is really a super upgrade from my old brother printer and I recommend it.

The ink cartridges are huge and will last for thousands of pages, they are easy to install and print high quality, bright pictures.

Downloading and setting up the app was quick and easy. The layout of the app is great and makes everything clear. It is also easy to print things over WiFi, and is often quicker than using the app.

One fault I found was that when printing photos with lighter colours in them, the picture is often orange toned, this may be a fault with my printer, however I mostly print text so this doesn’t bother me too much. It was also slightly louder than I expected.

This is a great printer and I have happily recommended it to my colleagues and friends.
