I really wanted a laser 4K projector for home but ideally one that could work in a bright room when needed and preferably without needing to mount a 25kg monolith on my ceiling.

Against this brief, the LG HU85 is ideal. Although it isn’t small, it is considerably easier to handle than the long throw 4K projectors I was considering from other manufacturers.

Plus, being a short throw means greater brightness and less susceptibility to light in the room - I can legitimately watch this with the curtains open which is great for casual viewing. However, in darkness it really pops and the picture is gorgeous.

One challenge in having a short throw is combining it’s necessary placement front & centre with the centre channel speaker in my 7.2.4 setup but I found a great stand that allows the centre channel to sit closely beneath the speaker and sufficiently to work well if not perfectly.

My gripes with this projector are twofold.

Firstly, support from LG seems poor. The content store lacks a number of apps available on other LG products and some don’t work pending a “software update” (Disney+ being a well documented example). LG don’t appear to have offered a software update since launch (and certainly not in the 12 months since I bought this projector which suggests to me than LG are not especially interested in supporting this product).

I didn’t buy the LG for it’s Smart TV functionality but, as an owner and user of other LG TV’S, it was a selling point that I (and my family) would find it intuitive to use given that it purported to operate it the same way. It does, but the content available to the projector is a poor cousin of what you can find in the content store for televisions.

Secondly, it doesn’t support 24p playback, which means movies shot in conventional 24 frames per second look juddery when panning and it is really noticeable. Even the credits exhibit some judder. This seems like a real misstep for a product that should surely be looking for an audience among cinephiles?

Honest review I hope this makes your mind up to purchase or not I agree with some of the reviews and disagree with others ok Dolby atmos does not play on the actual system but if your spending all this money you should own a home theatre set up I have a denon 6500 on a 7.2.4 and nvidia shield pro and no problem with Dolby atmos or dsx the picture on the HU85 on you tube 4K contents are superb up there with the 4K TVs but HDR black levels can become a bit washed out the system is a bit tricky to set up on the screen as you need to Set the bottom and the top and work at the sides . Maybe building a separate unit is your best option . The Xbox series x will run 4K at 60HZ and the latency is ok for 1 Pearson shooters why anyone says that short throw projectors are silent need there heads looked at this projector can be heard at 30-32 db at full power mode and 28 at medium I wouldn’t like to be watching the quiet place listening to fan noise in my ear hole , Please can someone make a hush box for a short throw projector pros : 120 inch laser 4K that looks excellent : arc HDMI support : runs Xbox series games at 60HZ 4K no gutter and no latency - Cons black levels poor on HDR : hard to fit picture onto screen : Fan noise a bit high . Would I still buy this projector again yes

The system is not been updated so that you can't use apps like Disney+ I will be returning mine.

This projector is amazing. I wasn't keen on getting one as thought picture quality would be bad and you would need to blackout the room - WRONG! My husband convinced me and I am so glad he did! You can put the projector up to 2 inches form the wall, so ours just sits on the media unit where our old LG tv used to be. The screen size is amazing, and the quality is insanely good - it really is just like being at the cinema. The picture is clear even in the middle of the day with the lights on and all the curtains opened. I also really like the easy to use smart tv software. All you need for it to work is wifi and to plug the power cable into the wall. Can't recommend the Cinebeam Laser 4K enough!!
