    Excellent first lens

It's the perfect lens for me because I am new to the photography game and I wanted a single lens that covers a wide zoom range that's not extraordinarily expensive. Not a high end lens due to it's aperature (though it takes very very good quality photos), but it's a perfect inexpensive start so I decide later if I'm willing to pay several times its price for top-end lenses.

    Ideal all rounder

I bought this two months ago to replace my EF lenses and provide a one stop shop for days out & travel. It is just as sharp as my previous L series glass even though this is not an L series lens. With the Lightroom lens profile I have no problems with distortion or vignetting when I import my RAW files. All in all it’s a great lens for everyday use when you don’t need a specific prime handy.

    Superb for a super-zoom.

I don't usually bother with these kinds of super-zoom lenses, which have always been terrible whenever I've tried them in the past, but as my four nephews and nieces are all getting interested in insects and birds when we meet up—and of course since social distancing means we're all a little further apart than usual—I thought something like this which could cover both standard family pictures and the occasional butterfly or closer bird might be fun.

I have to say I'm very impressed with nearly every aspect of this lens. Autofocus is as good as any lens gets; extremely fast, confident, smooth and silent. Even my EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II isn't always quite this slick. Manual focus via the control switch is a bit laggy, as it always is with focus-by-wire mirrorless systems, but it's a little more responsive and smoother than the STM RF lenses, and I appreciate that this control ring is 'clickless' by default (my preference even for stills) for the benefit of manual focus, rather than needing to be sent in to Canon for that modification. The stabilisation is fairly effective, keeping about 8 out of 10 shots sharp at 1/15th at 240mm, and below 100mm every shot is perfectly sharp down to about 1 full second. The zoom ring is a little uneven at the two extreme ends, but is smooth through most of the range and stiff enough that you can set the length very precisely and it won't shift much unless you intentionally change it again. The switch to lock the lens to 24mm for travel might be useful, but so far I've not experienced any 'zoom creep' anyway.

The build quality isn't so impressive, but is still pretty decent compared to what I've experienced before with this kind of lens. Of course there is significant extension when zooming all the way to 240mm and with that kind of extension always comes a little bit of wobble, but considering the 10x zoom length you're getting here it is understandable and acceptable. The zoom and focus/control rings are fitted well with zero play in them and the mount attaches firmly but not tightly, as it should.

The optics are also a compromise but again a totally understandable one. The 24mm end requires significant distortion correction (in-camera distortion correction is forced on and can not be turned off when using this lens) and in raw files you'll see that it doesn't actually cover the whole sensor, but instead is almost like a fisheye lens with the corners cut off. Luckily the optics are clear enough that even after correction sharpness is quite good and the various fringing is not exaggerated too badly, so the 24mm end is acceptable. 35 through to around 100mm is very good. After 100mm pincushion distortion becomes extreme, though at least this it manages to cover the whole sensor, and again it corrects well enough with enough detail remaining that it's not an issue in the final image. Vignetting is also quite strong (approximately 2.5-3 stops by my reckoning) throughout the range but within the range that both raw processing software and in-camera corrections can clean up well enough. Rendering is nothing special—bokeh can be a touch rough, colour and contrast are merely okay—but that's to be expected. You don't buy a 10x zoom if what you want is some kind of world-class magical rendering.

The weight, size and price are not anything particularly fantastic but for this sort of zoom range they're all fair.

Overall the positives significantly outweigh the relatively minor negatives and for a general-purpose outdoors lens there's not much else I could ask for. I do think at this sort of price there's no reason why the lens hood couldn't be included in the box, and weather sealing is the obvious feature that is sorely missed, but we all know Canon would only add those if they could also slap on a red ring and charge double the price. As it is it can't be called perfect, but it's still extremely good as far as super-zooms go and for the purposes of a outdoor family lens it's certainly up to the task.
