LG + MacBookPro
Arvosana 5/5Näyttö yhdistyy uuteen MacBook Pro koneeseen kätevästi yhdellä johdolla, joka samalla lataa läppärin. Yhteys on toiminut moitteetta.
Arvosana 4/5This is a great thunderbolt display, I have it setup on a new MacMini (2018) server alongside a 2011 Apple Thunderbolt in dual display mode. The UltraFine offers noticeably more colour depth and richness than the Thunderbolt and is considerably brighter. I have no complaints about the screen performance.
The stand is clutter-free, functional and allows desk space to be used, the height adjustment is a great feature.
However, on first setup, the screen took a VERY long time to be recognised by the MacMini in dual display mode - so long I thought it was not going to work at all. Additionally when the MacMini is woken from sleep in the morning, waking up both displays can take 30-45 seconds.
When the LG does wake, the brightness control does not respond - the old Thunderbolt works fine. I find I need to open the System Preferences and make a Display Arrangement adjustment to reset the display and trigger the LG to respond to brightness controls.
An expensive display, worth the money if you are going to sit in front of it all day. Five stars all round easily if the quirks around the wake-up were fixed.
Really good, in nearly every way.
Arvosana 4/5After owning a lot of displays over the years, these are easily the best ones I've every owned for non-gaming business and design usage, especially on Apple Mac machines with the OS integrations, but even users on other operating systems can enjoy most of its benefits.
At 27" they match the size of Apple's previous Cinema/Thunderbolt Displays, not only offering the same resolution, but importantly at double the quality level (218 pixels-per-inch). This is great as it almost identically matches MacBook Pro laptops (220ppi), so items stay consistent with one another across screens, and the quality is as near to print as you can currently get.
Other display qualities that are excellent, include: colour gamut (99% DCI-P3) at a depth of 10bits, 500nits max brightness (plenty bright enough in most environments), anti-glare treatment (helps reduce glare decently), IPS panel with nearly a full 180-degree (178 to be precise) viewing angle, and finally HDCP2.2 & HDCP1.4 support when needed for DRM-controlled content.
The dual 5W stereo speakers are also decent for built-in ones, as is the camera which does full HD 1080p compared to Apple's laptops at 720p standard HD. It also has a built-in mic, which like all built-in ones, is decent enough for basic online chat usage.
Having three additional downstream 5Gbit/s USB-C gen.1 ports on the back of each display is useful for connecting basic USB peripherals that require slow/medium speed connections. For example, you can connect an external backup drive to the back of a display and it will back up the connected Mac's internal SSD, meaning you don't need to connect this drive directly into the Mac.
In fact only a couple of items may slightly annoy some users. The ambient light sensor only works with the latest 2018 models of Mac (not the 2016/2017 ones) which features the "True Tone" capability with the "Automatically adjust brightness" macOS settings.
Additionally related to this, are the displays brightness settings controls. If you have two LG 5K displays connected to a 15" MacBook Pro, you can adjust only one of the LG 5K's directly using the keyboard, without having to opening the Display Preferences on the Mac, and more importantly they do not have a way to control ALL your displays brightness settings at the same time; to be able to easily set exactly the same brightness across all three of your displays (two LG 5K's and the MacBook's display) by using just one slider control rather than three separate ones.
Hopefully the latter issue may be addressed by a software update in future, as usefully the UltraFine LG 5K displays feature "Screen Manager" software, meaning that along with screen layout controls, the display can receive software updates later on.
Perhaps in a future version we'll be able to plug two Macs into one screen and easily flick between them and have picture-by-picture/picture-in-picture options. But with todays tech, this really is an astounding display monitor that as a Mac user I can strongly recommend.
Absolute Rubbish
Arvosana 1/5I own two of these monitors and after just under 3 years both Monitors have broken and although getting some power both screens are black and cannot display any images. I have never felt so let down by a product. Nobody should be sold a product that only last a couple of years and is then absolute useless.
Constantly Slow Mac's
Arvosana 1/5I have had this monitor for 2 years now and it's just awful, primarily because of how it slows my mac down to a crawl when connected via thunderbolt to a 2018 mac. I have been over and over in the past trying to sort but the hassle is no longer worth it. My issue isn't the patched wifi problem. My mac is unusable when it's plugged in and there are 0 firmware updated. Avoid
