Pretty old hardwareArvosana 4/5
Pros:
- Good quality/price ratio (provided you buy it for 169.99€)
- Overall functionality is ok, I can watch 1080p videos directly from NAS over SMB (with SSD installed).
- If you're into embedded Linux, you can find firmware sources and build your own firmware for the device.
Cons:
- Hardware is very old and slow. I was able to read a fast SSD at just 148MB/s, and with RAID+LVM speed goes down to 109MB/s.
- Drive encryption is not supported (and it would be super-slow according to cryptsetup benchmarks).
- iSCSI doesn't support exporting drives directly, it only exports a file on an ext4 filesystem on RAID/LVM. iSCSI performance is bad for some reason (around 57MB/s for reading).
- Power consumption is quite high: device consumes 19W even without any disks installed! There is no sleep mode, only poweroff with WakeOnLan (where it consumes around 1W).
- Device firmware is quite poor in terms of security: software components are very old, firmware is not signed and is downloaded over unencrypted FTP connection. Additonally, there is a backdoor which allows executing arbitrary code from a USB stick when it's inserted into the device during boot.
