    Superb Performance

Bought to replace a failed 24-105mm, the 24-70mm is a far superior lens with superb performance at all apertures and light conditions. There are no apparent ‘soft’ areas and colour rendition seems perfect. The only drawbacks are the weight (but it feels very robust) and the need to change to a longer lens more often, but the quality is such that I will often opt simply to crop the image instead.

    I have the EF 24-70mm 2.8 I

These models all have the same issue with a ribbon cable breaking inside and rendering the lens unusable unless only using 2.8 aperture. The ribbon also frictions when moving the zoom so sometimes you cant get it to 24mm without resistance. Tried requesting a quote but canons page says that the product is out of its use life. (When this is a problem that had happened to the person that sold me the lens after repairing it). Really love this lens, but how am I supposed to buy the second version if it still has the same problem as the first, and then you won´t be able to repair it after canon condones it ¨At the end of use life¨

Great Lens, but prone to error 01

When this lens is in a working condition, one can get amazing results, but unfortunately is very prone to failure.

I've owned 3 copies of this lens and every single one gave me the dreadful "error 01". There's a flaw on it's design that tears up the ribbon that controls the aperture, and when that happens you're stuck with f/2,8. Going beyond that aperture will result in camera lock down.

I really love this lens, since it is very sharp, and it renders very nicely, but after buying 3 different copies thinking that I could be bad luck (all brand new) now it's time to find an alternative.

I own 12 canon lenses (of which 4 are zooms) and this is the only one that consistently fails on me. A shame...

    THE GOOD

    • Sharpeness
    • Colour rendition
    • Bokeh
    • Lock to prevent creeping zoom
    • Metal bayonet
    • Good Glass

    THE BAD

    • The zoom extends outside the body
    • Flimsy Parasol
    • No stabilization
    • Heavy

    THE UGLY

    • Prone to failure (error 01)

Great lens but such a shame with a known flaw

Love the lens, really good results for many different shoots. However after it stopped working out of working, I researched the problem and it's a common fault. Which is shocking on a lens that expensive, a ribbon cable or faulty aperture motor causes the lens to basically be handicapped at 2.8. Such a shame and very dissapointing that this is a known problem.

Big aperture, smooth bokeh, stunning pictures

I bought this lens as a upgrade form the f/4 version.

The overall build quality of this lens is simply amazing, feels like a tank and handles like a RollsRoyce. It's performance throughout the focal lenght is great, the photo's produced are tack-sharp en the smooth bokeh is really stunning. Although when shooting wide open the corners will loose a bit of sharpness.

The autofocus ring USM is almost non audible when switched on. Also the focus ajusting ring on the end of the barrel lets you keep control over the focuspoints even when the autofocus is switched on. So there is pratically no need to turn it to manual focus when using it in daylight/sunrise/sunset. Though in twilight/studio manual focusing might become more useful because the autofocus is not focussing right.

A nice addition of the mark II version is the locking mechanism which keeps the lens from extending during walking or non use.

Though this is a fantastic lens and it produces beautiful pictures. There is one thing I would have liked to see on this lens. Image stabilization would have made this fantastic lens simply magical.

    Great lens, but ......

Untill one or two years this was an excellent lens. And in many shooting situations you can still take fantastic pictures with it today. But it would be desirable that Canon would finally build an image stabilizer into this lens. In the important group of low light situations, there would be more possibilities to use the lens with IS.

    Perfect lens

I am using Canon lenses since 1981 and this one, the 2.8/24-70 II, is the best Canon lens I have ever used. Before I have bought it in 2014 I often had to change lenses (2.8/20-35 L or 2.8/17-35 L to 1,8/85 or 2.8/80-200 L or 24-85) but since then I use the 2.8/24-70 II) as a standard lens for my work as a journalist nearly all the time (plus EF 100-400 and 1.4/50).

It has a wonderful bookeh and an impressive sharpness in the center area even at 2.8. Unfortunately the lens hood sometimes moves from its original position and is turned a few degrees and then you get dark corners. Since the days of the FL-lenses back in the 1960's Canon always had problems to find a good solution to mount the lens hoods...

Nevertheless I do recommend this lens as a perfect deal.

    A Great All-Rounder

I upgraded from my original 24-70mm as I was bothered by edge to edge sharpness in my original lens choice. This lens shows none of those issues and is now my lens of choice to keep attached to my camera, only swapping when longer reach or wider angle is required. Image quality is superb and great for portraiture. The f2.8 maximum aperture is great for subject isolation. Focus is fast and zoom ring is well placed and sized for easy handling. The zoom lock is a great feature for when my camera is bouncing around on my hip. IS would have been the icing on the cake but with the fast f2.8 apertiure is almost superfluous. A great compliment to my Canon 5D MkIV and it goes everywhere my camera goes.

Good Quality Lens - Shame about Lens Hood & no IS

I bought the product to complement my 70-200 mm lens. I was able to dispose of my 24-105 mm lens. Sadly this lens does not have Image Stability which the 24-105 mm lens does. The new 24-105 mm lens has 4 stops Image Stability so lack of Image Stability is a serious failing. Sadly I experienced lots of problems with the lens when I first used it due to vignetting caused by a faulty fitting lens hood. I eventually bought a replacement lens hood and the problem has been solved. The lens was expensive so i certainly did not expect to have technical problems with it. I should not have had to buy the replacement lens hood.

    Quality boost to my photography

I first rented this lens to try it out at a close friend's destination wedding in June 2014, and was blown away by the quality boost to my work. This was my first L lens, and there were immediate improvements in terms of colour saturation, contrast, and noise straight out of camera, even for RAW files. I was able to cut down my processing time by a bit, and loved the performance across every situation I threw at it. Portraits and low-light exposures benefitted from the non-variable f/2.8 aperture when zooming in, and busy travel/street landscapes had a natural crispness that I didn't get with my kit lens. I loved it so much, that when the opportunity presented itself, I bought the lens during the Christmas sales in December 2014, shortly before visiting my family in the Caribbean for the holidays. Since then, my images improved significantly, and I began switching careers to become a professional photographer in June 2016: something that I dreamt of doing since getting my first DSLR as a hobbyist in 2009. This lens is now my go-to workhorse as a portrait & event photographer: my best camera equipment investment, bar none...
