Still one of the best gaming CPUs on AM4 in 2026!
Upgraded from a Ryzen 7 3700X to the Ryzen 7 5800X3D 10th Anniversary Edition on my B450 board and the jump in gaming performance is huge. Installation was very easy. The included Carbice Ice Pad is a nice touch and makes applying the thermal interface clean and mess free. Running it with my Noctua NH-D15, temperatures stay excellent: low to mid 60s °C in games and only high 60s or low 70s under full Cinebench load.
The massive 96 MB 3D V-Cache still shines in 2026. In Star Citizen, Elden Ring, The Witcher 3, RE9, Cyberpunk 2077 and Arc Raiders I’m getting 40 to 70 % higher average FPS and much smoother 1 % lows compared to the 3700X, especially at 1440p. For pure gaming it remains extremely competitive even against much newer non X3D processors, all while staying on affordable DDR4.
It’s not a productivity monster (video encoding and heavy multitasking are clearly behind modern Zen 4/5 and Intel chips), but since I mainly game, that’s not a problem. Multiplier is locked so no traditional overclocking, but PBO and Curve Optimizer still give a nice little boost.
It’s great that AMD brought this legendary gaming CPU back for AM4. If you already have a solid AM4 platform and a good cooler like the NH-D15, this is one of the best and most sensible upgrades you can still make. Highly recommended!
AM4 never dies!
