Probably need to get used to it

I wanted to get back to having a proper camera instead of using a phone. Early days yet with it. Been touring New Zealand . Overall it's okay but my wife's iPhone 16 zoom is better than the 210mm zoom lens I bought. Overall I'm a little disappointed with the sharpness of the images. The GPS is annoying having to remember to connect it to the phone. The time also goes out. Transferring to phone works okay but it would be nice after it decides to disconnect that it didn't put another copy over instead of prompting the file exists.

I've been comparing with my iPhone 13 photos and they are also superior.

I should have practiced more probably before I traveled so hoping things improve. I do like the flexibility of choosing aperture or shutter speed.

    Easy Carry

I purchased the R50 as a light carry anywhere take anything camera. My photography mainly consists of roaming about where I live, seeking out images for my website, so it needed to be light and easy to carry. I've coupled it with the RF 35mm F1.8 lens and that's all I carry. So far I'm happy with the purchase.

Do be aware that the camera is small, so if you have large hands you could find using it a problem. Even though I have small hands, and familiar with Canon cameras, it has taken a few weeks to adapt and avoid pressing buttons inadvertently.

    Faultless

After many reviews and originally looking at action cameras to recored the family holidays etc. I went with the r50, can’t fault it brilliant bit of kit so easy to use even when you start getting into manual mode. Already got another lens beware it starts to get a little expensive but the pictures you can get with this compared too a phone do not compare.

    Amazing quality

I took the plunge to move over to mirrorless having used an EOS70D for some time. Not claiming ageism, but the 70D was becoming a bit weighty being as it had an 18-200mm lens as standard. I read a few reviews about the R50, and decided that as a ‘kit’ coming also with the 55-210mm lens, it would effectively have most bases covered for my particular needs. The first thing to note was that it was smaller than the DSLR, but not so much that it interfered with its general operation. It was also significantly lighter, and therefore much easier to handle. The image through the viewfinder was crystal clear, the shutter operation was also noticeably quieter, and appeared to be faster. Albeit early days, I have yet to find any form of ‘downside’ to the R50’s performance for me, describing myself as a keen amateur. Some of the reviews claimed that the battery did not seem to last on each charge, personally I have not found that to be the case, but then, that could simply be down to usage at the time. What I would recommend (and this is something I have always done with my cameras/lens) is to fit a UV filter. This is merely added protection should the worst happen and you damage the lens somehow. Rather than spend a considerable amount of money to replace the lens, just a few pounds will cover the cost of a new filter, which in no way alters the overall result of the photograph taken.

    Getting to know the R50

I bought the R50 to replace my Olympus M10 a few weeks ago. The images that I have got from it have been very pleasing. The camera is a wonderful "walk about" camera being small and light. The only thing that has caught me out is accidentally pressing the right hand cross key and finding that it has gone into a "multi shot mode". Not really a fault with the camera just my fumble fingers! As I see it the camera has huge potential with the vast array of lenses that can be fitted. So far I have only "scratched the surface" of what it can do. This is my first Canon camera and I am very pleased with it.
