High school students can soon take their matriculation exams with a Mac under 1,000 euros – here's how Abitti 2 affects their most important purchase

Press Release June 23, 2026

The new Abitti 2 system for matriculation exams will expand device support starting fall 2026, and students will soon be able to take their exams on Apple Macs in addition to Windows and Linux computers. According to Verkkokauppa.com, this change will revolutionize device choices for high school students.

The new Abitti 2 exam system, developed by the Matriculation Examination Board, is set to launch with the fall 2026 matriculation exams. This update will significantly change what types of computers students can use during exams and practice sessions.

The most significant practical change is expanded device support. While the previous Abitti system limited device options, Abitti 2 enables exams to be taken on various device types, including—for the first time—Apple Macs running macOS.

Verkkokauppa.com estimates that this change could quickly impact device purchases by high school students and their families, especially now that Apple has introduced more affordable MacBook Neo laptops starting at 699 euros.

"We're not used to this price point from Apple, and it makes Macs a more accessible option for students than before. With this change, you can now choose a laptop based on your actual needs rather than being restricted by exam system limitations," says Antti Aulavuori, Category Manager for IT devices at Verkkokauppa.com.

Previously, many high school students had to factor in the technical requirements of matriculation exams when choosing a device. In practice, this often meant compromising on things like operating system or user experience.

"We often see situations where students get a 'safe choice' for matriculation exams, even though a different device would better suit their daily needs. Abitti 2 can eliminate this conflict, and Macs will no longer automatically be a risky choice," Aulavuori notes.

Verkkokauppa.com is currently Finland's largest Mac retailer, and according to the company, demand for these devices could grow especially among high school students if the new system becomes established as planned.

Back to School is the busiest time for computer sales

While the expanded device support brings welcome freedom for students, the transition period may also create some uncertainty in computer retail.

"Even though there's more choice now than before, it's worth confirming up-to-date guidelines and device compatibility with your own high school before making a purchase decision," Aulavuori reminds.

The August back-to-school season is the busiest time of year for computer sales. According to Verkkokauppa.com, many future high school students are making one of their most important purchases right now.

"The start of school is a good time to think about getting a new computer from a broader perspective. With this change, the same device can serve you throughout high school, and there are now more options available, even for those interested in creative fields."
